When using barcode printing software to generate barcodes or design and print various content labels, you will see various noun attributes about barcodes in barcode software. Common barcode terms are organized as follows:
Note: The following are terms in the National Standard of the People's Republic of China GB/T 12905-2000.
bar code : A marker consisting of a group of regularly arranged bars, spaces and their corresponding characters to represent certain information. Such as: barcode (one-dimensional barcode).
bar code system: a system composed of barcode symbol design, production and scanning.
bar;dark bar;black bar: The less reflective part of the barcode.
space;light bar : The part of the barcode with high reflectivity.
start character;start cipher;start code : Several bars and spaces at the starting position of the barcode.
stop character;stop cipher;start code: a number of bars and spaces at the end of the barcode.
clear area;quiet zone;quiet area;clear zone: a limited area with the same reflectivity as the empty space on the outside of the start and end of the barcode.
bar code symbol : The barcode that includes the blank area.
character set : A collection of letters, numbers, and symbols that a barcode symbol can represent.
central separating character: A number of bars and spaces located in the middle of the barcode to separate data segments.
separator : A special character in the coded character set that acts as a separator.
bar code character : Several bars and spaces representing a character or symbol.
bar code character set: A collection of bar code characters that can be represented by a certain bar code.
bar code data character : A barcode character that represents specific information.
bar code check character : The barcode character representing the check code.
bar code filler character : A barcode character that does not represent specific information.
element : The bar or empty that constitutes the barcode characters.
bar height : The height dimension of the bar perpendicular to the cell width.
bar width : The width dimension of the bar in the barcode characters.
space width : The empty width dimension of barcode characters.
bar width ratio : The width ratio of the widest bar to the narrowest bar in the barcode.
space width ratio : The width ratio of the widest space to the narrowest space in the barcode.
X dimension : The nominal size of the narrow cells in the X barcode symbol.
Z dimension: The actual size of the narrow cells in the Z barcode symbol.
width to narrow ratio: N The sum of the average width of the bar and the average width of the space (excluding the bar code character interval) divided by twice the Z size. It is a technical parameter in the width adjustment coding method.
Calculation formula: N=(average width of bar + space width of average width)/2Z
bar code length: The length from the leading edge of the barcode starter to the trailing edge of the terminator.
bar code symbol length;symbol length: The length of the barcode including the blanks.
aspect ratio : The ratio of the bar code length to the bar height.
bar code density: The number of barcode characters represented by the unit length barcode.
Note: Usually expressed in CPI, that is, the number of barcode characters that can be expressed per inch.
inter-character gap : The area between adjacent barcode characters that does not represent specific information and has the same reflectivity as the empty space.
module : The basic unit of barcode characters formed by the module combination coding method.
bearer bar : A border or box that surrounds the barcode and has the same reflectivity as the bar.
Continues bar code: A barcode without barcode character spacing.
discrete bar code: A barcode with barcode character intervals.
bi-directional bar code: A barcode whose both ends of the barcode symbol can be used as the starting point for scanning.
add-on: A barcode indicating additional information.
odd-even check: A method of checking according to whether the number of 0 or 1 in a binary digit is odd or even.
self-checking bar code: The barcode character itself has the verification function.
fixed length of bar code: A barcode with a fixed number of barcode characters.
unfixed length of bar code: a barcode with an unfixed number of barcode characters.
width encode: The barcode encoding method in which the bars and spaces in the barcode symbol are composed of wide and narrow units.
module combination encode: The barcode encoding method in which the characters of the barcode symbol are composed of several specified modules.
binary-edge-code: Two-unit width barcode, barcode characters composed of two-width units.
four-edge-code: a barcode with multiple unit widths A barcode character consisting of three or more width units.
odd permutation; odd parity: In the module combination encoding method, the sum of the number of modules in a bar code character is an odd arrangement.
even permutation;even parity: In the module combination encoding method, the sum of the number of modules in a bar code character is an even-numbered arrangement.
bar code logic value: A representation of the barcode characters represented by binary "0" and "1".
encoded volume: The maximum number of characters that can be represented in the barcode character set.
bar code film master: The master of the bar code film.
linear bar code; one-dimensional bar code: a barcode symbol that only represents information in one-dimensional direction.
two-dimensional bar code: A barcode symbol that represents information in two dimensions.
special bar code: barcodes made of special materials.
character value: The intermediate value of the one-dimensional barcode converted from the barcode logic to the character set.
codeword: The value of the 2D barcode character. The intermediate value converted from the barcode logical format like character set.
error correction character: The character used for error detection and error correction in 2D barcodes.
error correction codeword: The value of the error correction character in the 2D barcode.
reflectance;reflectivity: The ratio of reflected light intensity to incident light intensity.
diffuse reflection: The phenomenon in which light projected on a rough surface is reflected in all directions.
specular reflection: The phenomenon in which light projected on a smooth surface is reflected in all directions.
The above are some barcode terms that will be encountered when using barcode printing software or doing barcode related work.
