What are the differences between the interfaces USB-KBW, USB-COM, and RS232 for barcode scanners?

March 06 , 2025

1.USB-KBW

Characteristics: USB-KBW is an interface that simulates keyboard input, similar to how a USB keyboard operates. It is plug-and-play, requiring no driver installation, and data is directly transmitted to the cursor's current position. It is compatible with most operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, and Android.

Suitable Scenarios: Ideal for scenarios requiring quick and simple barcode data input, such as office software and data entry.

2.USB-COM

Characteristics: USB-COM is a USB virtual serial port. While the physical interface is USB, the data transmission simulates serial port communication. It requires the installation of a virtual serial port driver (some systems like Windows 10 may have it pre-installed) and supports command trigger control, making it suitable for scenarios where data interaction via serial port tools is needed.

Suitable Scenarios: Commonly used in industrial control and data collection scenarios that require precise control and complex data processing.

3.RS232

Characteristics: RS232 is a standard serial communication interface, typically using a 9-pin serial port (DB9). It offers long transmission distances (up to tens of meters) and stable communication, independent of complex systems. It requires serial port tools (such as serial port debugging assistants) to receive and process data.

Suitable Scenarios: Widely used in industrial automation and production line data collection scenarios that demand high transmission distance and stability.

Summary

USB-KBW is suitable for quick and simple data input scenarios, requiring no additional drivers and offering ease of use.

USB-COM is suitable for scenarios requiring complex data processing via serial port tools, supporting command control.

RS232 is suitable for industrial environments, offering long transmission distances and stability, but requires additional serial port tools and possibly drivers.

The choice of interface depends on specific application requirements and device support.
